in science, all you need is passion and hard work. you learn, you apply. you work hard, you perform better. other stuffs don't matter much. stuffs like family background or status - i doubt if it has a huge impact toward the student's performance [correct me if i'm wrong, though].
but studying law or any other humanities subject, family stature does matter. not in a bad 'that kind of way' though. it's more to the background one has in life. if you're rich, it means you have more successful parents, educated presumably, who would know what's best for you since you're little. you would be sent to the best schools, have the best books, best tutors, best toys, best daily schedules... basically the best upbringing.
then you enter university. learning humanities. students in humanities [law, admin science, masscom etc] are taught on how to market themselves. we learn knowledge, too, yes but at the same time, we also learn on how to improve our persona, how to polish our confidence, eloquence and speaking skills. our abilities to answer questions, apply - duh, future lawyers are paid to speak, for God's sake.
effort and hard work does matter, but not wholly. 50% the most. others? well, natural talent, style, confidence, poise, passion, fearlessness...
therefore, even if you're not that obsessed with knowledge, you'll be alright in the law faculty as long as you have the X factors as mentioned above.
the issue being exactly that.
not everyone has the chance to speak english since they were a baby. i spoke total gibberish and kelantanese dialect since i was born up to my first day at school. then i knew westlife and the english language came knocking down my door. but still, my english speaking skills sucked. real bad. it improved, naturally, until now.
other people - some of them never have the chance to experience the supposedly 'sophisticated' upbringing like the others. wealthier parents educate their child in a wealthier manner. they'll speak english, fluently, read english books, watch disney n not kluang man.they have astro, go to disneyland and sunway lagoon. their parents' friends are all people of the upper class - those who matter in society. the exposure they receive is wider. as a result, their thinking would mature quicker than others.
hence, they entered the law faculty with a polished enough personality. it is marketable already. whereas children of the normal middle class family began struggling to cope. not enough confidence to face the aggressiveness of the education system, not enough fluency to speak out in class, not enough general knowledge of the world to argue with the lecturers.
work as hard as you get but when it comes to speaking in public, you can never be good enough like the confident students who are standing up there, surrounded by this aura that they were born to become lawyers.
the feeling is almost frustrating. people began having thoughts like "i wish i am somebody's son," only so that they could have the same exposure since little, too.
it is grossly unfair. but there's nothing we can do about it. since we know as well that it's unfair to say it's unfair. it's not their fault if they were born from such background and surrounding. some people are born with more privileges than the others. that is a fact of life. as long as we live sincerely and work hard, we'll do well, for ourselves.
but it's funny, in a way. so the normal kids have to work twice as hard to advance to the supposedly 'sophisticated' level, but the upper-class kids have to work twice as hard as well to prove that they're actually smart due to their own credit notwithstanding their family status.
so cutting things short, i guess life's fair if we are grateful with what we have. rich or poor, hardworking or lazy, rich father or not-so rich father - there are moments where it doesn't make a difference at all.
just need to wake up, then... and stop bullshitting to others on how your life sucks compared to the normal kids. trust me, we have it worse...
Ruby Jusoh is thankful that she was raised with an unhealty balance of everything - dad with huge salary but huger debts and hugest number of families to feed, over-nagging mother etc, etc... she knows she's not gonna be rich but she'll try her best to be happy and content with what she has...
p/s: i am beginning to dislike on how my blog is becoming less and less about me but more and more about my thinking and the complicated shits inside my head. so, for the sake of vanity, allow me to post a pic of a happy looking me and a good friend of mine, hehe....
